Start your EF Gap Year by meeting fellow EF gap students at an intensive orientation on an EF campus outside New York City, where you gain all the skills you need to succeed on the program.
Goal: Get your year off on the right foot
Strategy: Set personal goals for your gap experience and create an action plan for how to achieve them.
Skills gained: Self-awareness, goal-setting, values, safety best practices, stress management.
Next, get to know Europe with an insider’s perspective on professionally guided visits to its greatest cities: London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Barcelona.
Goal: Gain cultural literacy through firsthand exploration.
Strategy: Use this tour as a learning lab for improving your knowledge of European history, art, and culture.
Skills gained: Curiosity, culture, knowledge, flexibility, group dynamics.
Now build your communication skills at a fully accredited EF language school abroad. We offer 7 languages, all located in world-class cities: Spanish, French, Italian, German, Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean.
Goal: Connect with others more profoundly by communicating in their native tongue.
Strategy: Learn another language by living and studying in a country where it is spoken daily.
Skills gained: Language fluency, cross-cultural communication, presentation skills, exposure to new ideas / lifestyles.
Then help a community in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Peru, Tanzania, or Thailand empower its youth, improve its water and food supplies, or preserve its environment.
Goal: Do something good for the environment, for others, and for yourself.
Strategy: Embed yourself in several local communities of a host country to learn about the challenges they face and then help contribute to solutions.
Skills gained: Teamwork, community-building, empathy, ecology, outdoor skills, resiliency.
Winter break: 6 weeks
College App Seminar
3 DAYS – Optional
Work with professional advisors to craft an amazing college application and essay during this 3-day intensive in Boston.
Goal: Apply to the college of your dreams (or reapply).
Strategy: Learn how to convert your experiences into a compelling story for college admissions officers.
Skills gained: Personal branding, strategy, resume building, essay writing, networking.
Term 2: January - April
Immersion in Australia & New Zealand
After Winter Break, continue your EF Gap Year by exploring the world with your fellow gap students on guided cultural immersion visits to Australia and New Zealand.
Goal: Take a deep-dive into the past, present, and future of Australia and New Zealand.
Strategy: Test your own ideas around post-colonialism and globalization against those of another English-speaking culture located a hemisphere away.
Skills gained: Critical thinking, contextualization, research, outreach debate.
Next, gain valuable business experience abroad by interning at a respected organization in a world-class city: Bangkok, Berlin, Dublin, Madrid, Paris, Seoul, Sydney, or Tokyo.
Goals: Understand how society works on a professional level.
Strategy: Take your first big step as an adult by living on your own and interning in a field of interest.
Skills gained: Independence, entrepreneurship, business culture, personal finance, time management, problem-solving.
EF Leadership Academy
Then attend a transformative series of leadership workshops, seminars, and simulations, led by professionals in the field. (Location to be announced.)
Goal: Discover your inner leader!
Strategy: Develop leadership skills through strengths-building, teamwork, and motivational techniques.
Skills gained: Leadership, conflict resolution, team motivation, negotiation, public speaking.
Finally, share all you’ve learned during your EF Gap Year at our program wrap-up, which includes a gala farewell banquet and awards ceremony.
Goal: Return home a true citizen of the world.
Strategy: Evaluate all your experiences and develop a post-gap plan for success in college and your career.
Skills gained: Reflection, self-assessment, strategy, commitment.

Where will your EF Gap Year take you? The combinations are endless, since you choose the destination for you Language Study, Service Learning, and Internship.
